Trading standards advice for businesses

We provide advice to businesses to help them comply with the law.


Making sure that your business complies with trading standards law is important, but can sometimes seem daunting. We are here to help. We have a team of experienced trading standards officers, with a wealth of knowledge, who are happy to help any Derbyshire business, large or small, with practical advice and guidance.

Any Derbyshire business who want business advice from us has the following options available.

Business advice on trading standards law

Business Companion contains impartial, free information about the trading standards law affecting your business.

It's run nationally by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute and is government-backed. You can view the advice online, download guidance leaflets and register with the site to receive updates.

Derbyshire Trusted Trader scheme

Businesses can join the Derbyshire Trusted Trader scheme (if eligible) where, in addition to other benefits they will be entitled to up to 2 hours free advice per year.

Primary authority partnerships

If your business operates or sells products beyond Derbyshire, including online sales, you may be able to enter into a Primary Authority Partnership. Under the Primary Authority scheme, other regulators are unable to take enforcement action where you have followed specific advice provided by us.

D2N2 Growth Hub

Up to 2 hours free advice per year will be provided to any Derbyshire based business that is referred to us via the D2N2 Growth Hub. You can find out more by visiting our better business regulation pages

Vision Derbyshire

The Vision Derbyshire business support scheme offers one-to-one advice to new start businesses based in Derbyshire who are within their first 12 months of trading. Grant funding is also available subject to meeting eligibility criteria.

Signposting and self help advice

Business Companion site is a free, impartial advice for businesses that sell goods or supply services to consumers, run by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute.

Business advice from GOV.UK provides useful information for self employed and sole traders about starting up and running a business in the UK. There is also guidance available on legal requirements for specific products and services.

Trading standards service fees

We charge fees for the verification and testing of weighing and measuring equipment and for petroleum and explosives licensing and registrations.

We also charge for providing business advice in certain circumstances.
