Visit the Virtual Home
More than 2 million people in the UK already use some form of TEC in the home – for instance for home security or managing use of energy in the home. 14% of us regularly use a monitoring device or personal alarm. Virtual Home does the same for support – it helps you to see all of the TEC choices you could potentially use, making your life easier and safer.
What the Virtual Home is, and how to use it
The Virtual Home is a simple way for you to explore an imaginary home online on your screen.
It shows practical TEC solutions for each area of your home that can help you stay safe, confident and independent. There's a simple tutorial explaining how to use it, or you can go straight into the tour. It’s like looking at a home for sale online, with technology!
As you move through the home, you’ll find helpful ideas such as:
- falls detectors and alerts
- medication reminders
- door and movement sensors
- smoke and safety alarms
- video calling and communication tools
- smart home devices (lights, voice assistants)
All of these are designed for real life situations. You can filter the devices to suit what interests you, for instance to see devices helping with falls. It will also give you key words so you can search for these products online, and a description of each device for you to save and print.
Virtual Home has been developed by the TEC Services Association (TSA), and the site doesn't recommend any named suppliers. It is simply to show you all of the choices you have.
Virtual Home is designed to be usable on smartphones and tablets as well as laptops or computers.
How it can help you
Technology doesn't replace care, but it does add extra support where you need it. With Virtual Home, you can easily see and understand your options. Many people are surprised by what technology can do:
- Stay independent for longer - small changes can help you remain safely in your home.
- Feel more confident, knowing what might help you before speaking to professionals or family.
- Support loved ones - families and carers can find ways to reduce worry and keep loved ones safe.
- Plan ahead - explore TEC options early, so you can make informed choices and future-proof your home or the home of someone you care for.
- Reduce the chance of risks, accidents and near-misses which might require urgent care such as visiting A&E.
