Active travel masterplans

We're committed to making travel more active by making walking (no matter how far), wheeling (whether scooting the kids to school or using mobility aids), and cycling (for everyday journeys) more convenient, accessible, and appealing to a wider range of people.

To support this, we've developed active travel masterplans for the Hope Valley. These plans set out a comprehensive strategy to encourage and support sustainable travel by improving infrastructure, safety, and accessibility.

"An active travel masterplan is a comprehensive strategy developed to encourage and support active and sustainable modes such as walking, wheeling and cycling. The plan includes a range of measures to make active travel safer, more convenient, and more appealing to a wider range of people."

Investing in active travel brings a range of benefits, including:

  • reduced traffic congestion and lower emissions, leading to better air quality
  • improved physical and mental health through increased activity
  • a boost to local businesses by creating more vibrant, people-friendly places

Our vision

To enhance active travel across Hope Valley, we aim to connect towns and communities with key attractions, education, and employment sites. By linking existing routes, transport hubs, and tourist centres, we'll encourage active travel for everyone.

Working with community groups, stakeholders, and following consultation with residents and businesses, active travel masterplans have been drawn up for the Hope Valley area.

The purpose of these masterplans was to assess the current interest of the public and appetite for active travel within their towns.

The action plans propose a vast range of interventions - from strategic route improvements, through to better sign positing and more seating. It's not intended that a decision about any changes will be made based solely on these plans - they'll inform further considerations for planning.

Delivering these action plans will require collaborative working across all levels of local government as well as partnership working with community groups.

Hope Valley

Following the success of the market town programme, we've committed to the development of an active travel masterplan for the Hope Valley.

Evidence base analysis and initial stakeholder engagement is complete and a public engagement exercise has been launched

Take part in the Hope Valley survey

A survey has been launched to collect your views on the Active Travel Masterplans being drawn up for the Hope Valley.

Results from this survey will help to inform how the next step in planning could proceed, and any future proposed changes would require a further formal consultation following successful funding.
