Road resurfacing programme 2026 to 2027

We resurface a road when it has reached the end of its lifespan and it is beyond repair using preventative maintenance techniques like micro asphalt or surface dressing.

Highways capital ivestment programme

The full list of major road improvements for the county to be carried out during 2026/27 are included in the Highways capital ivestment programme document attached at the end of this page.

Our road resurfacing programme

We remove several centimetres of the worn out road surface and replace it with new material, to give a smooth long lasting surface.

Resurfacing a road is the most extensive structural repair we carry out and, due to the significant costs involved, can only be done at a limited number of locations across the county.

On average, resurfacing is 5 times more expensive than micro asphalt and around 8 times more expensive than surface dressing. As an example, micro asphalt costs around £10 per square metre and surface dressing approximately £7 per square metre. In contrast, resurfacing costs up to £53 per square metre.

Resurfacing takes much longer than other repairs like surface dressing. Often the road has to be closed completely and traffic diverted meaning longer journey times and some inconvenience for local road users. We always do our best to minimise delays as far as possible.

As part of our annual highways capital programme, we intend to invest more than £7.3 million during 2026 to 2027 to resurface 69 sections of road across the county, covering 116,000 square metres, equivalent to 16 professional football pitches.

Major road resurfacing repairs during 2026/2027

This is the full road resurfacing programme for 2026/2027 across Derbyshire.

The locations are shown in month by month order and include the location as well as details about the electoral division of the local county councillor.

The weather has a significant bearing on this work. This will mean the schedule published here is likely to change. Please use this information as a guide only.

Where possible, we try to minimise disruption by working outside of peak travel times. If we need to close the roads, diversions will be in place.

Residents affected by the works will receive updates on our temporary on-street information sign boards.

We apologise for any delays or last-minute changes due to circumstances beyond our control.

Small-scale resurfacing repairs

Our small-scale resurfacing schemes are for roads where, despite repeat visits and repairs, potholes have reopened on the surface.

At these sites, we replace the top layers of the road surface across either a lane or the full width of the road, laying a new smooth surface with new lining. This provides a permanent, long-term repair.

The road is temporarily closed for the safety of the public and our team, as heavy equipment will be used on site.

This year we intend to spend £3.2 million at 69 sites across the county.

The list of small-scale resurfacing sites includes the following.

March 2026

  • A444 Mount Pleasant Road, Castle Gresley, scheduled for repairs on Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 March 2026
  • Manystones Lane, Hopton, scheduled for repairs from Monday 23 March 2026 for 3 nights
