Travel Smart week

Travel Smart week takes place each May and October. This is where pupils are encouraged to make the most of their school journey as a way to help them keep fit, beat traffic jams and pollution, as well making sure they remember to travel safely too.

Travel Smart

This October sees the return of Travel Smart Week, 20 to 24 October 2025, to encourage pupils and families to embrace healthier, safer, and greener ways to travel to school.

This year's theme, inspired by the SMILERS 7 ways to wellbeing, invites children to become Travel Smart Superheroes, using creativity and action to promote positive change in their daily journeys.

Each day of the week highlights a different wellbeing focus, along with fun and engaging travel activities:

  • Mighty Movers Monday – celebrates teamwork and connection by asking children to assemble their Travel Smart superhero team
  • Super Shoesday – suggests that children can step out in style with fabulous footwear and embrace walking, wheeling, or car sharing
  • Wonderful Wheelers Wednesday – encourages children to discover the power of observation and road safety while designing protective gear
  • Fabulously Fluorescent Thursday – promotes the idea of bright high-visibility clothing and accessories to stay safe and seen
  • Fantastic Fume Friday – inspires children to reflect on how smart travel choices support others and the planet

Children and their grown-ups are encouraged to draw and share their superhero designs on social media via Travel Smart X account and Travel Smart on Facebook, showcasing their commitment to cleaner air, reduced traffic, and improved wellbeing.

Travel Smart Week is supported by Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership and the Public Health Grant, and aims to:

  • reduce traffic congestion around schools
  • promote physical activity
  • improve air quality
  • enhance road safety awareness

Parents and drivers are reminded to support the initiative by avoiding engine idling, parking responsibly, and ensuring children use appropriate car seats or seat belts.
