Traffic and road safety improvements

During the 2026/2027 financial year, we will invest a total of £1.6 million to improve road safety across the county.

Our traffic management and road safety team is responsible for making sure people can use our roads and pavements safely and easily.

Key areas of work include:

  • safety barriers at sharp and blind bends
  • road sign replacement programme to improve awareness and reduce visual clutter which can distract road users
  • road markings and lining to raise awareness of junctions
  • street furniture
  • high friction, anti-skid surfacing to improve braking and reduce accidents
  • the introduction of traffic regulation orders (TROs) to minimise traffic delays by reducing opportunities for inappropriate on-street parking

We use money from our annual highways grant provided by the government and the East Midlands Combined County Authority.

Key road safety projects 2026/2027

This year's (2026/2027 financial year) projects to improve road safety include the following.

A632 Span Carr Crossroads, Ashover - feasibility study

We're looking at different design solutions to alter the current road layout for the junction of Alicehead Road, Birkin Lane and the A632.

This is to address an identified personal injury collision history at the junction and address ongoing concerns with the junction layout.

A632 Hernstone Lane, Mount Pleasant bends, Peak Forest – safety scheme

This is a road safety scheme to reduce vehicle collisions along this stretch of road.

The works include road signing improvements, high friction road surfacing, drainage improvements and a review of the safety barriers.

Bridge strike prevention scheme - phase 3 (countywide)

Working in partnership with Network Rail, this is an ongoing programme to improve the road signs on the approach to low bridges to alert drivers of high sided vehicles to use an alternative route.

Signs on bridges to advise of their height will also be improved.

Shardlow Road, Aston on Trent - new pavement scheme

This is part of ongoing works to create a new pavement on Shardlow Road, in Aston on Trent.

The pavement will connect Aston-on-Trent parish with local countryside walks and the Trent and Mersey Canal Towpath.

Luke Lane, Brailsford – new pavement scheme

This scheme will provide a new section of pavement on Luke Lane, linking a footpath from a new residential housing development to the local school and local amenities in Brailsford.

A517 Ashbourne Road, Turnditch – new pavement scheme

Following the construction of several housing developments along the A517 in Turnditch, our new pavement scheme will help vulnerable road users reach local shops, the schools and village hall.

A57 Snake Pass – Safer Roads Fund Project

This is a major scheme of works that involves significant improvements to the A57 Snake Pass between Glossop and the boundary with Sheffield City Region.

The planned works include safety barrier changes, new safety cameras, road marking improvements, road signing improvements, high friction surfacing and some road layout improvements.

Work will be delivered in stages, with works likely to commence in late 2026.

A6007 Chalons Way, Ilkeston – roundabout improvement scheme

This scheme will improve road safety at the busy roundabout with Station Road to help reduce vehicle collisions.

The works include changes to the road markings and installation of high friction surfacing to help vehicles stop more quickly.

Victoria Avenue, Borrowash – new Zebra crossing

The new Zebra crossing at Victoria Avenue will provide a safe crossing point for pedestrians and vulnerable road users in this busy shopping area.
