Highway structures

During the 2026/27 financial year, we will invest £3 million to maintain and repair the county’s highway structures including bridges, retaining walls, landslips and underground culverts.

Key projects 2026/2027

This year's major projects include the following.

Landslip repair and design investigation programme

A57 Snake Pass

Geotechnical investigation works and feasibility studies are continuing along the length of the A57 at numerous locations where there are existing landslips including:

  • Doctor’s Gate
  • Alport
  • Gillott Hey
  • Wood Cottage.

Geotechnical ground investigations works during June / July 2026 at the Doctor’s Gate landslip site will help us understand more about the ground and rock formations, to design and cost a repair solution.

There are 220 landslips recorded across Derbyshire. Following additional funding from the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA), we have a £7 million repair budget. Projected costs to repair the four A57 landslip sites are estimated to be at least £60 million.

Leashaw landslip, Holloway

Construction works to repair the Leashaw landslip started in July 2026 with works expected to be completed during January 2027.

Station Road, Bakewell and Limetree Wood landslip, Beeley

Initial works to develop solutions to the 2 landslip sites have been completed.

We intend to appoint a contractor to carry out the repairs later in 2026, with work expected to start in Spring 2027.

B5056 Fenny Bentley to Tissington Ford landslip - feasibility study

Initial design works are underway to identify an appropriate repair solution for the two landslips.

Bridge programme

General and principal bridge inspections

Across Derbyshire, we are responsible for the repair and maintenance of over 1,200 bridges.

We inspect bridges to make sure they are safe for public use.

We carry out 2 types of inspection:

  • General inspections – we visually check the condition of the bridge, taking photographs and measurements to check the wear and tear to the structure. These inspections are done every 2 years.
  • Principal inspections - are carried out every 6 years and involve a more detailed inspection of the structure of the bridge. We look at the visible structure of the bridge, including the walls, arches and metalwork to check their strength and condition.

During 2026/27, we will carry out 910 general inspections and 42 principal inspections.

Information gained from these inspections will help us understand the overall condition of each bridge and develop a programme of repairs for to maximise the lifespan of the structure.

Harrington Bridge strengthening (phase 2) - construction

Harrington Bridge carries the B6540 Tamworth Road over the River Trent.

In 2023/24 a major maintenance scheme (phase 1) was carried out to the structure where the structure was repaired and repainted above the water level.

The proposed phase 2 programme of repairs, expected to start in late summer 2026, will involve repairing parts of the bridge below the water level, including the bridge piers - the steel and stone foundations of the bridge, as well as the cross steel cross bracing between the bridge piers.

Froggatt bridge, Froggatt

The bridge carries Stoke Lane, a single carriageway over the River Derwent in Froggatt.

Design works are underway to identify a solution to prevent the collapse of the bridge walls (parapets) of this Grade II listed structure and a Scheduled Monument.

Fernilee culvert repairs

The culvert carries the A5004, a single carriageway, over a tributary to the River Goyt in Fernilee.

Design works are underway to identify appropriate repairs including strengthening or lining the culvert.

Bakewell Bridge

This Grade I listed structure and a Scheduled Ancient Monument carries the single carriageway (A619) over the River Wye in Bakewell.

Over time, the masonry has become severely weathered. Design works are in progress to identify a long term repair solution for the structure.

Buckland Hollow culvert

The structure carries Buckland Hollow Brook beneath a single carriageway (A610) at Buckland Hollow. Design works are commencing for the rehabilitation of the culvert by repairing or lining.

Highway retaining wall inspection and repair programme

Across Derbyshire we have over 180 miles of historic retaining walls.

The walls support major and minor roads like the A6 and A623 as the roads have often been built into steep hillsides.

This financial year, we will inspect 300 retaining walls. Any repairs required will be carried out or scheduled to strengthen the walls.
