Disposing of gas bottles

What can I do with an old gas bottle?

Branded caravan or boat type cylinders (Calor Gas for example)

Our household waste recycling centres will not accept these cylinders, legal ownership remains with the gas company who issued them and so they should be returned to this company and not disposed through our sites. Visit Liquid Gas UK for disposal information.

Unbranded caravan or boat type cylinders

If you have a cylinder with no markings to identify its legal owner you can bring a maximum of 2 into our household waste recycling centres within a calendar year.

Commercial gas cylinders

Cylinders containing commercial type gases such as those used for welding will not be accepted.

Medical gas cylinders

Gas cylinders containing oxygen should be returned to the medical facility which issued them.

Fire extinguishers

Our household waste recycling centres will only accept fire extinguishers specifically manufactured and sold for domestic household use, maximum size 2kg, and a maximum of 2 extinguishers within a calendar year. Extinguishers which originated in a commercial business premise will not be accepted, these should be disposed through a private sector hazardous waste disposal contractor.
