Applying for Tree Preservation Orders permission

We are responsible for administering our Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) which involves safeguarding individual trees, groups of trees and woodlands.

Making an application for tree works

If you wish to carry out work on a tree protected by a Tree Preservation Order, you'll need to make a formal application.

We prefer you to make an application through the Planning Portal and specific instructions are attached to this page. You'll be able to upload the required supporting materials for a valid application, and on submission they'll be sent to us directly.

Or you can download an application form which is attached to this page. This can be completed electronically and returned to us by email, or printed, completed and either scanned, or posted to us with the required supporting materials.

Due to legislative and regulatory changes to the planning system, it is mandatory to submit your application either through the Planning Portal or make an application on the supplied application form. You must provide all required information as detailed in the advice notes. We cannot accept applications in any other format, for example old versions of application forms or letters.

There's no charge for submitting an application and we aim to determine your application within 8 weeks of receipt.

Advice on completing your application

We will assess the impact of your proposal on the amenity of the area and whether the proposal is justified, having regard to the reasons and additional information put forward in support of it.

Applications that propose work to prevent or manage structural or other damage caused by a tree should be justified with professional and competent advice and relevant surveys. Please read the advice note before filling in your application form. It's important that all mandatory information is provided.

If you don't supply precise and detailed information may result in your application being rejected or delay in dealing with it.

Before sending your application to us, we advise you to use the validation checklist to ensure you have included all the necessary information.
