A road safety marshal is an individual who is already employed and managed by the school, but in an alternative role. They can help support the safe crossing of children at designated locations.
All marshals must receive appropriate training from our school crossing patrol service.
The primary focus is to support the safe movement of children across the road, reducing the risk of road traffic incidents.
A marshal can't stop traffic. Only trained school crossing patrols, with the correct uniform and stop sign can stop traffic, alongside police and other legally allowed professionals.
Each location must be subject to an appropriate risk assessment to determine:
- the level of risk present
- whether it is suitable and safe to deploy a marshal
- whether the use of a marshal provides an effective control measure to reduce identified risks
Decisions regarding the deployment and use of road safety marshal at specific locations will be informed by recognised best practice and national guidance. The National School Crossing Patrol Guidelines provided by Road Safety GB will be used to support consistent, evidence-based decision-making.
This approach ensures that any deployment of road safety marshals is proportionate, risk-led, and prioritises the safety of children and road users at all times.
Benefits
Gives cover to sites where a patrol is absent, or the site is vacant.
Responsive to periods of irregular demand. Marshals may be used for school events or other occasions when a patrol would not be suitable or available.
There is no assessment criteria to be met, as there is with a school crossing patrol.
