Changing your child's secondary school at other times

You may want to apply for your child to change schools other than when they are due to start secondary education. This could be because of a change of address. These are known as in-year admissions.

This section includes information about applying for a school place if you move to Derbyshire and transferring to further education at 16 plus.

In-year applications for admission to school

Changing a child's school is a very important step to take. It can affect your child in many ways. Guidance notes are provided to help you though the in-year application process. It's important to read the notes before completing an application.

Free internet access is available at all Derbyshire libraries and children's centres. Some schools may also let you use their computers and telephones to make an application.

You may also complete a paper application form. To get a paper form, email: admissions.transport@derbyshire.gov.uk or tel: 01629 537479 and ask for an in-year application form.

Some Derbyshire schools now handle their own in-year admissions directly with parents. They're not listed on our in-year application forms.

Some schools in Derbyshire will accept approaches direct, but may still require you to complete our application form. Schools are required to notify us of all applications and their outcomes.

If you want to apply for a place at a school in another council area you should contact the council where the school is located.

Moving to Derbyshire

If you're moving to Derbyshire from another area you should always use your current address on your application (even if this is outside Derbyshire). Once you've relocated, you should contact us by email: admissions.transport@derbyshire.gov.uk or tel: 01629 537479 to get details of the documentary evidence you'll need to provide to confirm your relocation is complete.

Statements of special education need and education health and care plans

For children with statements of special educational need or education health and care plans, parents should contact us, email: education.senadmin@derbyshire.gov.uk

Schools you can apply for

You can apply for places at all mainstream infant, primary, junior and secondary schools, including schools in neighbouring council areas.

Applications for places in post-16 provision should be made direct to the establishment.

We do not deal with applications for places at independent schools.
