Free school meals at primary school

All pupils in key stage 1, reception, year 1 and year 2 should be offered a universal infant free school meal which will be funded by the government.

As well as this all pupils regardless of their age, whose parents receive the following support payments may be entitled to receive free school meals:

  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • the guaranteed element of State Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit

Children who receive Income Support or Income Based Jobseeker's Allowance in their own right are also entitled to receive free school meals.

We can help you find out about the welfare benefits you may be entitled to and how to claim.
