We are experiencing financial challenges and have put forward proposals to close the centre, on Melandra Road, in order to save £360,000 a year in running costs.
More than 3,600 people have already taken part in the 12-week public consultation which was launched last month to gather people’s views about the potential closure – including alternative options that would impact all household waste recycling centres in Derbyshire.
Anyone wishing to have their say should fill in a questionnaire online before the closing date on 23 July 2026. Paper copies can be printed from the website, are available from all Derbyshire libraries or by contacting Call Derbyshire telephone: 01629 533190 to be posted out. Completed paper copies can be returned either by Freepost or dropped into any Derbyshire library.
We operate 9 recycling centres across Derbyshire but Glossop has been earmarked for closure ahead of the others because:
- it collects the lowest volume of waste and recyclables – 3,800 tonnes per year – compared to our other 8 household waste recycling centres. The total amount collected across all sites per year is around 70,000 tonnes
- it receives the fewest visits – 65,700 a year compared to more than a million across all 9 sites
Other factors which support the case for closing the site include:
- substantial financial investment needed to make sure it continues to comply with safety regulations if it is to remain open
- many users live outside Derbyshire – 13% of visits are from vehicles which have been registered to use the site. As users must live in Derbyshire to register, this – based on information from Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras at the site – suggests a significant proportion of users could be traveling to the site from outside the county and do not pay council tax in Derbyshire
- most users visit the site infrequently with around 62% of all vehicles recorded over a 12-month period making a single visit and a further 25% visiting just 2 or 3 times
If the Glossop centre was to close, the closest alternative recycling centre would be Waterswallows in Buxton.
Our Cabinet Member for Environment Councillor Carol Wood said:
“Making sure this council is as efficient as it can be is our top priority and I’d like to thank everyone who has taken the time to take part in the recycling centre consultation so far.
“It’s great that so many people have responded but we’d still like to hear from more residents so we can understand how most people feel about the proposal to close Glossop Household Waste Recycling Centre to enable us to make a reasoned and balanced judgement when deciding next steps.
“You can have your say by completing the online survey or picking up a paper copy at any Derbyshire library.
“The proposal has been put forward because the council is experiencing financial challenges and must cut costs, but no decisions have been made about the future of the site.
“No decisions regarding other sites will be made as a result of this consultation, but it’s necessary that all alternatives to closure are reviewed.”
