Public consultation launches on future of Glossop Household Waste Recycling Centre and other cost saving options

Published: 30 April 2026

Residents across the county are being invited to have their say about proposals to close Glossop Household Waste Recycling Centre and a range of other cost-saving options at all Derbyshire recycling centres.

We are experiencing financial challenges and have put forward proposals to close the centre, on Melandra Road, in order to save £360,000 a year in running costs.

Now a 12-week public consultation has been launched to gather people’s views about the potential closure – including alternative options that would impact all household waste recycling centres in Derbyshire.

Anyone wishing to have their say should fill in our online questionnaire before the closing date on 23 July 2026. Paper copies can be printed from the website, are available from all Derbyshire libraries or by contacting Call Derbyshire on telephone: 01629 533190 to be posted out. Completed paper copies can be returned either by Freepost or dropped into any Derbyshire library.

We operate 9 recycling centres across Derbyshire but Glossop has been earmarked for closure ahead of the others because:

  • It collects the lowest volume of waste and recyclables – 3,800 tonnes per year – compared to our other 8 household waste recycling centres. The total amount collected across all sites per year is around 70,000 tonnes
  • It receives the least amount of visits – 65,700 a year compared to more than a million across all 9 sites.

Other factors which support the case for closing the site include:

  • Substantial financial investment needed to make sure it continues to comply with safety regulations if it is to remain open.
  • Many users live outside Derbyshire – 13% of visits are from vehicles which have been registered to use the site. As users must live in Derbyshire to register, this – based on information from Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras at the site – suggests a significant proportion of users could be traveling to the site from outside the county and do not pay council tax in Derbyshire.
  • Most users visit the site infrequently with around 62% of all vehicles recorded over a 12-month period making a single visit and a further 25% visiting just 2 or 3 times.

If the Glossop centre was to close, the closest alternative recycling centre would be Waterswallows in Buxton.

Cabinet Member for Net Zero and Enviroment Councillor Carol Wood said:

“Making sure this council is as efficient as it can be and that every pound of council tax-payers’ money is accounted for and spent wisely is our top priority.

“Proposals to close Glossop Household Waste Recycling Centre have been put forward because the council is experiencing financial challenges and must cut costs. But no decisions have been made about the future of the site and it’s important that local people have the chance to give their views so that we can make a reasoned and balanced judgement when deciding next steps.

“No decisions regarding other sites will be made as a result of this consultation, but it’s necessary that all alternatives to closure are reviewed.

“I’d encourage as many people as possible to take part in the consultation and have their say, either by completing the online survey at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/glossop-recycling or picking up a paper copy.”
