The forum was established in 2005 and has grown into one of the largest 50+ forums in Derbyshire. Our members come together to share ideas, learn new things and help shape the future of their local community.
Long Eaton and District 50+ Forum brings together people who want to stay active, connected and involved in their community.
The forum provides an opportunity to:
- make new friends and enjoy regular social contact
- stay informed about local issues and services
- share your views on matters that affect older people
- discover new hobbies, interests and learning opportunities
- take part in trips, activities and community projects
- help improve local services and facilities
- be part of a friendly and supportive network
Since 2005, forum members have worked together on a range of community projects and campaigns, including:
- a successful bus shelter campaign with Trent Barton and Erewash Borough Council, helping to highlight vandalism and improve local facilities
- organising beginner computer courses at the local library, helping older people develop digital skills and confidence
- supporting the development of a thriving local University of the Third Age (U3A) group
- establishing a popular travel club, giving members the opportunity to enjoy days out and visit places of interest across the country
Social activities
The forum offers much more than quarterly meetings. Members regularly enjoy social activities, learning opportunities and trips throughout the year.
Previous travel club visits have included:
- Tewkesbury
- Llandudno
- Nene Valley Railway
- Anderton Boat Lift and Canal
- Hull
The forum also supports a variety of learning opportunities, including computer courses and astronomy sessions.
Celebrating local history
One of the forum's most successful projects was Toton Sidings Remembered 1856–1984, an intergenerational heritage project celebrating the history of one of the area's most important railway sites.
The exhibition featured:
- historic photographs and railway memorabilia
- stories, letters and memories collected from local families
- displays documenting the history of Toton Sidings
- heritage artwork and historical interpretations
The exhibition was displayed at Erewash Museum, Long Eaton Library and Sandiacre Library, attracting interest from residents, railway enthusiasts and local families alike.
The forum continues to welcome guest speakers, organise social activities and support local projects that matter to older residents.
