Road permit scheme

Information about our road permit scheme.

Roads covered by the permit scheme

The permit scheme is designed to help us manage congestion. Not all roads are affected by or contribute towards congestion so they are excluded from the scheme. This ensures that costs for all parties are kept to a minimum.

Traffic-sensitive streets

We act in our role as the highway authority and may designate certain streets (or part of streets) as 'traffic sensitive'. A traffic-sensitive street is defined as one on which any work will create unacceptable delays and disruption to road users at specified times.

To help mitigate the impact of any works, we can impose working times and conditions, to direct and co-ordinate works effectively. These restrictions can be at certain times of the day, days of the week or days of the year.

National Street Gazetteer

The National Street Gazetteer (NSG) is the definitive reference dataset of streets within England and Wales used for street works, highways maintenance and traffic management.

In line with British Standard BS7666 (2006), the NSG is regularly updated by all 174 highway authorities with additional street data (ASD) such as road centre lines, ownership details, level of reinstatement required, height weight and width restrictions and direction of travel.

EToN

EToN is the acronym for Electronic Transfer of Notices, the internet-based street works notification system.

EToN notices contain all the relevant details of the works including location data, start and end dates, and any special requirements.
