Although we would like to, it would not be practical to grit all 3,300 miles of road in Derbyshire during periods of bad weather.
We aim to ensure that a network of treated roads should be reasonably free of ice and snow for the majority of residents and businesses.
We grit more of our roads than most councils and tough decisions have to be made about which roads are treated and which aren't.
The main gritting routes include:
most bus routes
links to villages
emergency service locations
areas around schools
and some other roads which we know have specific difficulties in bad weather.
In bad weather our teams will try to treat as many minor roads as possible once the main routes have been completed.
Highways England are responsible for main trunk roads which pass through the county such as the motorway and Derby City Council are responsible for roads within the city boundary.
