Mytham Bridge

We’re carrying out major repairs along the A6187 at Mytham Bridge and the riverbank opposite Dalmar House, due to river erosion.

Our repairs will start on Monday 23 June, for 15 weeks, subject to good weather conditions and any additional issues found on site.

The A6187 Hope to Hathersage Road will remain open while we carry out the works, with the existing temporary traffic lights remaining in place. Once the repairs have been completed, the lights will finally be removed.

Why the repairs are needed

The £1 million repairs are needed following river erosion to part of the retaining wall at Mytham Bridge and a stretch of the riverbank opposite Dalmar House, which has undermined and weakened both sites.

Our work programme

We will be working at the 2 sites along the A6187, where the temporary traffic lights have been installed.

Mytham Bridge

We intend to rebuild a 20-metre length of the retaining wall, by drilling interlocking steel sections into the ground beneath the level of the river. The piles will end up around 11 metres below the surface of the main road. This technique is known as ‘sheet piling’.

The retaining wall supports the busy A6187.

The riverbank opposite Dalmar House

Around 20-metres of the riverbank opposite Dalmar House has been washed away by river erosion. No retaining wall has ever been built at this site.

The damage undermined the edge of the A6187 verge, causing a dip in the surface of the main road.

To strengthen and protect the riverbank, we intend to drill a series of hollow, steel tubes into the ground. These will be filled with concrete to support the riverbank. This technique is known as ‘bored piling’.

At both sites a masonry wall will be built in front of the piles, and local stone will be used to ‘face’ the new wall to give a more traditional appearance in keeping with local buildings in the area. Where we can, we will reuse the existing stonework from the damaged section of the retaining wall.

New, improved road drainage

As part of the works, we will be improving the existing road drainage along this stretch of the A6187, with extra road drains to reduce the chance of surface water flooding.

We will also improve the condition of two existing drainage outfalls. This will prevent water collecting on the road, which could damage the work we have done.

Resurfacing

We will resurface the section of the A6187 covered by the temporary traffic lights.
