Holloway - Leashaw landslip

The road slipped here in November 2022 and is currently closed. Investigations are underway to develop a solution for construction in spring / summer 2026.

Following very wet weather conditions, Leashaw at Holloway was closed in November 2022 due to a major landslip. The landslip damaged the road and pavement.

Derbyshire is prone to landslips in wet weather conditions, due to the underlying geology of clay and shale, which once saturated, can cause ground to move downhill, due to gravity.

The pairs required at Leashaw are complicated due to the proximity of residential housing, and the many utility services contained within the road, some of which were affected by the landslip or had the potential to be damaged by any further movement.

We've worked very closely with National Grid, Severn Trent Water, and Cadent Gas to allow remedial work and diversions to be installed to ensure the integrity of their services and continuity of supplies to the community.

Regular monitoring of the road has detected signs of further movement after wet weather. Unfortunately, this has meant it has not been possible to open up one side of the road to light vehicles as had been hoped.

An independent road safety audit commissioned to look into the reopening plans raised some concerns about further ground movement, as well as how to ensure safe access for all road users.

Specialists have been commissioned to look at a long-term plan to carry out permanent repairs to the landslip which would enable the road to be fully reopened.

Following the announcement of new funding from the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) earlier this year (2025), for a multi-million-pound repair scheme, work is now in hand to start on site in spring / summer 2026 for up to 6 months.

The project looks likely to involve a circular piled solution, with concrete beams, faced with a stone retaining wall to support the ground, road and utility pipes to prevent a further landslip.

Information from ongoing ground monitoring reports will be used to finalise the plans, with procurement to appoint a contractor to start later this year. Discussions with landowners will also need to take place to secure agreement for the works.

Due to the road closure at Leashaw, the diversion route is Yew Tree Hill, Mill Lane, Lea Road, Mill Lane, A6 Derby Road to Whatstandwell, B5035 Main Road, Sandy Lane, Bowns Hill, Cromford Road.
