County Rider

What is County Rider?

We are offering free one-to-one cycle training to people aged 18 or over who live, work or study in Derbyshire.

The great thing about County Rider is that the programme can be tailored to suit your needs. Your instructor will design the programme to suit you whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced cyclist who wants to become an even better rider.

Benefits of cycling

Active travel is a great way to a healthy lifestyle - and cycling is a good way to get where you're going and become more independent.

Cycling is the third most popular recreational activity in the UK - millions of people ride a bicycle each month.

Cycling is one of the easiest ways to fit exercise into your daily routine because it's also a form of transport. It saves you money and gets you fit.

It's a low-impact type of exercise. This means it's easier on your joints than running but still helps you get into shape.

Cycling benefits the environment by reducing traffic congestion and helping to reduce noise and air pollution.

How long training takes

Our scheme offers up to 4 training sessions and each one can last up to 2 hours. The amount of coaching you need will depend on your instructor's assessment of your skill level and what you want to achieve. You'll learn how to stay safe, feel confident and travel independently.

The training is not strenuous and can be done at your own pace.

Our cycling instructors

Our instructors are professionally trained, fully insured and ready to help you. They will cover everything from how your bike works to route planning – but their key goal is to improve your confidence. Our training meets national standards recognised by the Department for Transport.

Equipment

Your bike needs to be in a roadworthy condition. If you do not have a bike, some instructors can provide one.

What to wear

Wear what you feel comfortable in. A high visibility jacket will be provided by your instructor. We strongly recommended that you wear a cycle helmet.

Apply for County Rider cycle training

Once we've received your application, we'll provide you with a unique reference number and a list of instructors. You can then contact your chosen instructor to arrange a date and time for your training.
