Central government funding for zero emission buses

Electric buses are heading for Derbyshire following our joint bid with Stagecoach for government funding to replace diesel models with a new, 'clean energy' fleet of electric buses.

and £5.1 million has been awarded by the government to support Stagecoach in purchasing 57 electric buses for their depot in Chesterfield - as well as vehicle charging infrastructure for the depot. This move will help to reduce the level of carbon emissions from transport in the county as well as helping to improve local air quality.

Stagecoach is also investing £25.31 million towards the cost of the zero-emission fleet, which will run on 13 local bus services across Derbyshire.

The new buses will operate both in rural areas, such as the Peak District National Park, and urban town centres which can experience concerns around air quality and congestion.

Areas to be served by the new fleet include Bolsover, Chesterfield, Derbyshire Dales and North East Derbyshire.

The new zero-emission fleet will consist of 39 double deckers and 18 single deck buses and will also comply with enhanced accessibility requirements with extra space for wheelchair users and people with pushchairs or prams.

Staffordshire County Council were also successful in their bid for funding for electric buses. Working with Diamond Bus this will mean that electric buses will also be introduced onto routes which serve Swadlincote in South Derbyshire.

National Bus Strategy

As part of our response to the government's new National Bus Strategy we have produced a Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) which is available on public transport in Derbyshire setting out our ambitious plans to change bus services for the better in Derbyshire from 2022/23.

The BSIP contains a variety of proposals including:

  • measures to improve bus service reliability and journeys times
  • improvements in the frequency and hours of operation of key services
  • new ticketing arrangements to make bus travel more affordable and integrated
  • an expansion in the number of areas where demand responsive transport services are available
  • improvements to bus service information including an increase in the number of roadside electronic real time information signs at bus stops
  • measures to improve integration between different bus services and between bus and rail including the development of transport hubs at key locations to help bring services together

The BSIP sets out the programme for how these measures will be introduced over the 5 years up to 2027/28 and the funding we are asking government to provide to help pay for them.
