Libraries have number of resources to help with your local studies research.

You can research local, family or house history using our resources:

  • Books, including county, town and village histories can be searched using our library catalogue. Many can be borrowed, but some are reference only. Please note that not every title is in the online catalogue yet, but we have a comprehensive card index at the Local Studies library in the Derbyshire Record Office

  • Journals: from lead mining to family history, fully indexed for you at the Local Studies library in the Derbyshire Record Office and Chesterfield Library

  • Newspapers: available on microfilm at some libraries

  • Old trade and telephone directories

  • Census 1841-1911 via AncestryLibrary.com (FREE in all Derbyshire libraries), or on microfilm

  • Old and modern Ordnance Survey and other mapping

  • Photographs and other illustration collections. Many are on our free-to-view site on Picture the Past
