Coronavirus and visiting our countryside sites

Our countryside sites and car parks are open for exercise in line with government restrictions.

Here's what you need to know before visiting and the measures in place to minimise the spread of COVID-19.

Please use our sites responsibly. Make good use of the space available and follow social distancing guidelines. Limit your use of narrow trails and towpaths which impact the 2 metre guidance.

Car parking

Car parks at our countryside sites are open. Please pay attention to signage around our sites and don't try to park if car parks are full. Parking charges apply.


Toilet facilities are open at:

  • Middleton Top
  • High Peak Junction Visitor Centre
  • Cromford Wharf
  • Tapton Lock (during visitor centre opening hours - generally 10am to 4pm)
  • Black Rocks
  • Elvaston Castle Country Park
  • Shipley Country Park
  • Hayfield
  • Grin Low

Additional cleaning is in place across all these sites.

Shops, visitor centres and cycle hire

Visitor centre kiosks offering take away refreshments are open at:

  • Shipley Country Park
  • Elvaston Castle Country Park
  • Middleton Top
  • High Peak Junction
  • Tapton Lock

Cycle hire at Middleton Top Cycle Hire on the High Peak Trail is open.

Cafés and refreshments

Shipley Country Park

Derby Lodge Tea Rooms are open from 9:30am to 3pm on Thursdays and Fridays, and from 9:30am to 3:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Ramblers coffee shop is offering indoor and outdoor seating as well as a takeaway service. Their full menu has been reinstated. Opening hours are 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, and 9.30am to 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays

Nutbrook Coffee Shop has indoor and outdoor seating and a takeaway service. Open from 10am to 4pm on Fridays and at weekends.

Elvaston Castle Country Park

Wyatt's Tea Rooms is open and serving from the hatches outside.

Fredericks Ice cream and Elvaston coffee van concessions are operating within the public car park

Tramper hire - all terrain mobility scooters

If you need a tramper, pre-booking is essential. You can hire a tramper at the following locations:

  • Shipley Country Park, Heanor
  • Elvaston Castle Country Park, Derby
  • Tapton Lock, Chesterfield Canal
  • Middleton Top, High Peak Trail
  • High Peak Junction, Cromford
  • Cromford Mill, Cromford
  • Creswell Crags Museum, Creswell

Children's play areas and outdoor gym equipment

The playgrounds are open at Shipley Country Park and Elvaston Castle Country Park, and the outdoor gym at Shipley Country Park. Please follow the guidance displayed for your safety and that of others.
