Stockley Trail

The Stockley Trail is a 2-mile multi-user trail for walkers, cyclists and horse riders which links Peter Fidler Reserve, Carr Vale Nature Reserve and our Glapwell countryside sites.

Barbecues are not permitted at any of our sites.

The trail was once part of the Midland Railway taking passengers from Chesterfield to Mansfield. Now you can enjoy spending time in the Doe Lea Valley alongside nature reserves and countryside sites.

What you might find

Stockley Trail and the adjoining reserves are on a main migration route and through the winter months large numbers of birds call to feed here. Look for the waders feeding and listen for the squealing call of a water rail hiding in the marshy areas. In the summer you should be able to see or hear sedge and willow warblers, yellowhammer and skylark. In September, swallows gather in the marsh, attracting hobbies, birds of prey which are skilled hunters on the wing.

Cyclists

Why not try our new adventurous mountain bike track? You'll find it on the Glapwell Countryside Site at the southern end of the trail. The track is a blue grade mountain bike trail and is suitable for anyone with basic off-road riding skills. We think you’ll find the track adds some fun and adventure to your ride. There's a second track at Williamthorpe Nature Reserve on the Five Pits Trail - give that one a go as well.
