National Curriculum

The National Curriculum sets out the core subjects that children in state or 'maintained' schools must be taught between the ages of 5 and 16.

The curriculum ensures that teaching and learning is balanced and consistent and sets out how subjects are taught; what skills, knowledge and understanding is required in each subject; attainment targets and how progress is charted and reported.

Within the curriculum schools are free to plan teaching and learning in the best way to meet the needs of their pupils.
