COVID-19 safety measures in adult community education centres

We've put the following COVID-19 safety measures in place in our centres to keep both you and our staff safe.

Safety measures in our centres

  • centres are open with reduced staffing - if you have an enquiry, make an appointment before you visit
  • there will be clear signs around buildings to ensure that social distancing can be maintained
  • centres will operate a one way system through the building
  • reception areas will have screens
  • desks and tables in classrooms have been placed to ensure that social distancing is maintained
  • face coverings (masks) must be worn by everyone in shared areas, unless you have an exemption
  • sanitiser will be provided to use on entry and exit and will be available to use on tables and chairs before and after use (and will be used on door handles)
  • all rooms will be well ventilated (windows and doors will be open)
  • all kitchens and drink-making areas, and shared seating areas will be closed
  • toilets are now unisex with a one in, one out system - at least one per floor
  • tutors and centre staff will be wearing visors or masks
  • enrolment forms and other necessary course paperwork will be emailed wherever possible to avoid handling paper
  • course resources such as handouts will be sent by email rather than printed out wherever possible

Coming back into our centres - what we'll ask you to do

Preparing to come in to a centre

  • some courses will be part online and part in-centre - you will need to complete both of these to get the most from your learning
  • you may be asked to complete a short questionnaire to ensure you have read and understood the safety measures put in place and that you agree to the requirements
  • if you are feeling ill, don't attend your class - inform the centre by phone or email
  • if you feel ill after attending your course, please inform the centre straight away
  • bring a clean, fresh face covering (such as a mask) with you - bring gloves with you as these may be needed in your class (for example, handing over resources)
  • bring your own pen, paper and files for course notes
  • bring any food and drinks you need as there will be none available in the centres
  • wear warmer clothing than normal as windows and doors will be open to ensure maximum ventilation
  • wherever possible wear freshly washed clothes as government guidance suggests this helps reduce infection
  • if your course requires any equipment or materials we will ask you to bring your own where possible
  • don't arrive for your class any earlier than 5 minutes before it is due to start

What to do when you're in a centre

Following this guidance is necessary for all learners attending our centres to ensure your safety while attending your course. You may be asked to leave the centre if you don't follow this guidance.

  • sanitise or wash your hands regularly (including after coughing, sneezing, nose wiping, and before and after eating), and on entry and exit
  • you must always wear your face covering in shared areas where keeping a 2 metre distance isn't possible, such as in corridors, reception, or queueing for the toilet, unless you have an exemption.
  • always follow centre signs and one-way systems to maintain social distancing
  • stay in your classroom during your whole session if possible
  • keep to your allocated table as all desks have been placed to ensure that social distancing is in place
  • use the sanitiser and wipes provided on the table and chair that you use before and after you use them
  • physical contact, such as handshakes, hugs and pats on the back are not allowed according to government guidelines - keep to a 2 metre distance at all times, if a tutor needs to come closer than 2 metres then masks or visors must be worn
  • if you use any centre tools or equipment you must wipe them using the disinfectant spray and wipes provided, and paper towels before and after use
  • report any contamination or spillages that need immediate cleaning

Remember you have a duty to help protect others as well as to yourself. If someone who has visited the centre tests positive for COVID-19, we will give you information about what to do. If you have any concerns regarding this guidance, please speak with your tutor or centre staff.

Stay safe and happy learning!
