Loan repaid as Buxton Crescent Hotel business sold to Champneys

Published: 8 December 2025

Leader of Derbyshire County Council Councillor Alan Graves has welcomed the repayment of a loan to the council following the sale of the Buxton Crescent Hotel business to luxury health spa operator Champneys, in partnership with Cheyne Capital.

Councillor Graves said:

“This is a great day for Buxton and Derbyshire. The future of this iconic hotel is secure, protecting jobs in the town and continuing to attract visitors to the area. And I’m pleased to confirm that the original loan provided by Derbyshire County Council to support the restoration of the Grade I Listed Crescent and adjoining Natural Baths has now been fully repaid.”

Champneys will continue to operate the hotel, retain existing staff, and work with local partners to support Buxton’s visitor economy.

Councillor Graves joined Champneys CEO Alan Whiteley, Cheyne Capital Director Theo Hajoglou and football legend David Seaman and his wife Frankie at Buxton Crescent Hotel to mark the sale.

Champneys is a long-term supporter of SoccerAid for UNICEF – a charity former England goalkeeper David has been involved with since its inception in 2006.

Alan Whiteley, CEO of Champneys said:

“Our 100th year is a celebration of wellness innovation, and Buxton Crescent perfectly aligns with our vision. We are thrilled to combine our expertise with this historic spa, blending centuries-old heritage with modern luxury and care. Our aim is to create a sanctuary where guests can truly focus on their health, recharge their energy and be inspired.”

Theo Hajoglou, Director, Cheyne Capital, added:

“We are delighted to extend our successful relationship with Champneys through this latest acquisition. Buxton Crescent is a property of exceptional heritage and quality that has been enhanced by its recent major restoration, and it will no doubt be a valuable addition to Champneys world-class spa hotel portfolio.”

The hotel building remains jointly owned by Derbyshire County Council and High Peak Borough Council.
