Staveley Library on Hall Lane will close to its last visitors in its current home at 12.30pm on Saturday 4 July 2026 so that work can begin on packing away all the books, computers and other materials and equipment ahead of its move to the new landmark Pavilion building in the town’s Market Place.
The new library will open to the public on Monday 20 July 2026, with an official opening ceremony taking place on the morning of Thursday 23 July 2026.
The Pavilion, which will house the library on the ground floor, is part of Chesterfield Borough Council’s Staveley 21 project, which has been funded through the Staveley Town Deal. We have been working closely on the library element of the project, including finalising detailed designs, with Chesterfield Borough Council.
The funding for the relocation and fitting out of the new library has been provided as part of the overall town centre regeneration project.
Cabinet Member for Environment Councillor Carol Wood said:
“We are really excited about the library’s move to its new home and are confident it will bring lots of benefits to residents when it reopens.
“The current Hall Lane site is on the outskirts of the town while the new Pavilion, which is a modern, purpose-built development, is right in the heart of Staveley.
“This improved location will make dropping in to the library much more convenient, and people who may not have visited before will be able to pop in to find out more about what’s on offer. It will also bring more people into the centre of town as part of the enhanced Market Place that has been created with Town Deal funding.
“We are particularly pleased to be able to launch this new library in the National Year of Reading, and encourage residents of all ages to explore the joy of reading and sharing books.
“We realise some people may be inconvenienced while the library is temporarily closed but we know its new home will be well worth the wait.’’
The new development, which is modern, multi-purpose and sustainable, with energy-efficient features, fits in with the Derbyshire Library Strategy agreed at the beginning of last year aiming to deliver a library service that is fit for the 21st century, is able to meet the needs of customers and puts libraries at the heart of their communities.
There will be no change to the current opening hours, and the new library will include:
- a dedicated children’s section with bright and comfy furnishings
- free access to public computers and wifi
- printing facilities (with a charge)
- a variety of comfortable seating and tables, including sofas, easy chairs, computer table/chairs, breakout/study/activity table and chairs
- display case of local heritage items
- self-service machines
- public toilets
While Staveley Library is closed ahead of its move, borrowed items will automatically be renewed until the new library reopens. The closest libraries are at Brimington, Chesterfield or Eckington, and items can also be returned at any Derbyshire Library. Find your local library.

As well as the new Pavilion building which will house Staveley Library with business space upstairs, the Staveley 21 project also includes improvements across the town centre. New feature paving, planting, lighting, CCTV, improved connections to the canal, and a new flagship play space, have created a more attractive town centre which will help encourage more visitors who will support local businesses and ensure that the town centre can thrive. Ivan Fomin, chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board, said:
“The completion of the town centre works marks a major moment for the Town Deal. Together our projects aim to help the community at all stages of their life and ensure that the town is a fantastic place to live and work. I’m delighted to see these works completed as this town centre continues to be a place where the community can spend time together and support local businesses.”
