Matlock and surrounding communities 50+ forum

Our group was established to look at and discuss issues that are important to the local 50+ community. These include transport, housing, access to information and representation for older people.

We believe it is really important that we listen to our members so we can make sure we provide information and discuss topics that they care about. We also try very hard to ensure we are representing the views of the local 50+ community correctly.

Achievements

Matlock and Surrounding Communities 50+ Forum held its initial development day on 19 May 2006 at the Edgefold Club, Matlock. Since our formation we have gone from strength to strength and have continued to work hard to represent the local 50+ plus community, bringing them information and advice on a wide range of topics.

In terms of achievements, we helped in the creation of a University of Third Age (U3A) in the Matlock area. There are now more than 36 Activity Groups and over 400 members involved with subjects varying from local history to art.

As part of the county-wide network of 50+ forums we were involved in establishing the local Handy Van scheme and working closely with Derbyshire County Council we were involved in the development of the Trusted Trader project.

What we're doing

Our open forum meetings have been useful with attendance varying from 30 through to over 100 people. They have provided the means for the local councils and health services to engage with older people in the area, and for our thoughts to be aired.

More generally we have been consulted by various public service departments on subjects ranging from transport to health care.

We are also currently working with local voluntary organisations to try and establish a help at home scheme for the area which will enable older people to remain living independently in their own homes.

If you have any ideas or topics you would like to see discussed at the next open forum meeting please contact the forum support officer.

Meeting and events

Unfortunately due to the lack of a management committee has become a virtual forum.

We'll send out information to members relating to health, wellbeing and local issues to ensure members are kept fully informed about services, activities and events in the area. We also issue a quarterly newsletter to members with interesting and informative articles.

The forum members have agreed that open meetings will no longer take place and information to be received via email or post for those with no access to a computer.

If you want further information about the virtual forum, please contact forum support officer.
