Education & learning

Derbyshire is one of the largest local education authorities (LEAs) in the country. We serve a population of over 740,000 people and maintain 431 schools. However, education is not just about going to school. Education provision in Derbyshire begins well before statutory school age and continues well past retirement age! In Derbyshire, learning is a lifelong opportunity.

When the time comes for your child to start school, we provide a wide variety of information to help make the transition as easy as possible.

We also offer full support and provision for children with special educational needs

Once your child is at school, what they learn is governed by the National Curriculum. In Derbyshire, we also provide a comprehensive range of out of school activities which aim to enhance the education your child receives. Our school catering services provide approximately 44,000 primary, secondary and special school meals per day.

We offer a range of adult community learning opportunities (opens in a new window) for those who want to learn a new skill or improve their existing ones, develop a new past time or just stay fit and healthy.

We also offer information on how to work with schools by becoming a school governor

We consult with the public whenever we have plans to reorganise some schools and reduce surplus places, so all children enjoy a high standard of education, or on any other educational proposals that may arise that we can share with the public.

Derbyshire LEA was inspected by OFSTED in September 2004 with the report being published on 8 December 2004.

We hope you will find the information you want within the pages of education and learning. If not, and you think we may be able to help, then please contact us

We work closely with the county's primary, secondary, special and nursery schools to help provide high standards of education to all the county's young people.
