Social worker apprenticeships

Read about Shannon Trodden's experience as a social worker apprentice.

Shannon Trodden, social worker apprentice

I am currently an apprentice social work student based within the Amber Valley south personalisation and prevention team.

I am now at the end of my apprenticeship journey and after 3 years, have qualified to be a social worker via the apprenticeship program.

Since starting work in adult care as a community care worker in 2018, I have been fortunate to work alongside some amazing social workers and have been inspired, not only by the work they do but the difference which can be made to people's lives, all of which motivated me to want to progress my own career as a social worker and get my degree.

Throughout my apprenticeship I have worked full-time and attended university one day per week. This blended approach between both learning, theory and practice has been such a positive to my experience. Although it can be difficult balancing work and study, it has allowed me to build upon my skills and knowledge whilst completing the work and surrounded by social work professionals able to support when needed.

This 'on-the-job' way of working has allowed me to build my confidence and be well equipped for practice as a qualified social worker.

As a social work apprentice, a typical week for myself would be completing all the normal duties of a social care professional including supporting clients on my case load, attending meetings, completing work as a duty worker, case recording etc.

A huge benefit of being a 'student' is the significant amount of support, supervision, and opportunities available to further knowledge. I have learnt that no question is a silly question and have been fortunate to be provided with a safe space for my learning. Alongside my responsibilities at work, being organised with university reading and assignments is essential.

Having completed my apprenticeship throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has been difficult however I am proud of how we as a cohort have adapted to include emphasising the use of technology and online lectures.

A highlight of my journey is being nominated for student social worker of the year. It was an honour to represent both Derbyshire County Council and the university.

I am proud to have been a part of the social work apprenticeship program and would whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone. It is an incredible opportunity to become a qualified social worker, whilst doing the job you love. I am extremely grateful to Derbyshire for this opportunity and look forward to seeing what the rest of my career brings.
