Tackling gambling-related harm training course

This training focusses on the state of play when it comes to gambling in the UK, its prevalence, harms and risk factors. It covers identifying those at risk, how to intervene appropriately in the short-term, and formulating action plans to ensure long-term recovery.


Course content

Modules include:

  • what is gambling, gambling prevalence and severity across Derbyshire
  • motivations, risk factors, gambling related harm (GRH)
  • identification, conversation starters, practical mental health first aid (MHFA) approach
  • intervention (both practical short-term and long-term specialist)

There are also practical activities and case studies.

The training content has been commissioned by our public health department and designed in conjunction with our adult education team, who will be delivering the course.

The Royal Society for Public Health has supported us to develop and evaluate our training strategy, to make sure it meets the level 2 training criteria.

Training dates

The following dates are available:

  • Tuesday 21 May 2024 from 9am to 3.30pm
  • Wednesday 19 June 2024 from 9am to 3.30pm

Training places can fill up quickly and we may have to restrict the number of places offered to each organisation per course. All courses form part of a rolling programme with new dates being released on an ongoing, regular basis.

Who the course is aimed at

This training course is appropriate for staff and volunteers in all organisations, regardless of background, experience, specific job role, or learning style.

The course adopts a first-aid approach to gambling-related harm through brief interventions and it complements our existing mental health first aid courses.

Course costs

The course is free for staff and volunteers from statutory, community or voluntary sector organisations, providing that a core part of the individual's role is working with Derbyshire residents.
