Transcript of the audio file

"This is the site of the old Williamthorpe Colliery. In amongst the factory buildings, if you look very carefully, you will see where the pit shaft is situated. It is actually new brickwork now around what is the pumping station.

"They still have to pump water from this shaft, which is approximately about 500 feet deep. It took actually 2 years to sink the shaft, because they found it really tough going through the rock. The water has to be pumped because it prevents other pits, other collieries, even working collieries in Nottinghamshire, from becoming flooded and they cannot allow the water to enter the water table. The water eventually comes out into the top of Williamthorpe Ponds nature reserve."
