"You walked under it, under a railway bridge, yes. And there it was, acres and acres of surface buildings. A washery plant, a coking plant and all the repair shops and electrical shops. Then there would be stacks of materials ready for going underground, the supports, you know, the machinery. There was 5 chimneys in what we called the pit yard, then there would be the screening plant, where the coal was screened, you know and what they called the salt house. Also, in the old days, long before our time there was a brick making factory and the miners walked home in their pit clothes or ride home on the buses, you know, and you'd see them with their black faces."
