"If you look in the bottom left hand corner of the information panel, you will see a picture of Heathcote Cottages. These miners' cottages on East Street were known locally as Sluggard's Row. Although the cottages were built just a few yards from Grassmoor Colliery, the occupants were always last to get into work and the name 'sluggards' stuck.

"The row ran along the view to your left and consisted of 5 blocks of 8 cottages, each on with 2 rooms up and 2 rooms down. A separate block of 8 cottages was built midway along the opposite side of the street, known as the 'Odd Block'

"To learn more about the goings on in this area, look for a copy of Cyril Fletcher Homes 'Sluggards' Row and the Mystery of Heathcote's Barn' at one of the local libraries.

"I can remember the late 60s and very early 70s, there used to be, what we called locally, a bomber car track, where we used to come and watch these cars race round an oval track. Very dusty, everyone went home blackened. It was a great day out.

"You can hear more stories from Derbyshire Countryside Service Ranger and ex-miner, Alan Heeley along the Five Pits Trail. Look out for the QR codes."
