"So here we are standing in Brierley Forest Park, which was developed as a country park between 1992 and 2000, to provide footpaths, cycling and horse riding networks. There were areas of planation woodlands, hay meadows, water bodies, streams and wet land areas. Originally a former colliery site, the park has been transformed into a wildlife haven, with nature walks covering over 2 miles. It is designated as a Local Nature Reserve and contains 4 local wildlife sites.

"The park also provides recreation facilities, a play trail, sculptures, local historical artefacts and the remembrance planting area. A visitor centre that offers refreshments, exhibitions and information, regular guided walks and events are organised. Schools are encouraged to use the park as an outdoor classroom for nature studies. The wildlife meadows are being sown with native species, such as yarrow and ox eye daisy. They provide a colourful display to visitors in spring and summer. The existing woodlands contain variety of native trees and shrubs, a wide variety of wildlife flourish in the park, including foxes, owls, grasshopper warblers, skylarks and a range of butterflies. The park which is one of 5 Green Flag parks within Ashfield, is managed by Ashfield district council in partnership with the friends of Brierley Forest park."
