Our challenge

We need to act to protect and improve Derbyshire’s natural environment and the lives of people in our towns and villages.

Our Climate Change Strategy was approved by Cabinet in 2021 and sets out our role and priority areas of work across 5 themes:

  • Council estate and operations
  • Low carbon economy
  • Decarbonising the domestic sector
  • Transport, travel and infrastructure
  • Waste

This Strategy is in its final year of implementation and monitoring. An annual progress report was considered by Cabinet in January 2025 which identified that most of the actions have been delivered, or are on track to be delivered, and have realised a range of environmental, social, and economic benefits. A final progress report is scheduled to be considered by Cabinet in January 2026.

A new Environmental and Economic Sustainability strategy will be developed to help us develop actions that:

  • provide a direct benefit to Derbyshire’s residents, communities and businesses.
  • align with legal requirements and other corporate and departmental commitments, objectives and priorities.
  • link to and support existing council strategies, plans and decisions.
  • take account of council resources and our level of influence over delivery and outcomes as well as the opportunities for partnerships and other external resources.

What we're doing

The actions we have taken have many benefits to residents and communities in Derbyshire, for example by lowering energy bills, improving health and wellbeing by reducing fuel poverty, enhancing green spaces, improving air quality and supporting investment in clean technologies and local employment.

With our partners, we're working with people in communities, businesses, local councils, interest groups across Derbyshire, and the UK government to play our part for a better environment.

We also need to be better prepared to deal with the effects of severe weather, such as heat waves, storms and heavy and prolonged rainfall, which have significant effects on our infrastructure, buildings and the natural environment.

To protect these, we need to take action to make sure our infrastructure is robust and our biodiversity and natural resources are protected and enhanced.
