Starting a new school or setting

Starting a new school or setting can be a time of mixed feelings; excitement, nerves and newness as well as getting to know new staff, the environment and expectations.

Here are some useful ‘top tips’ to support you to navigate this next adventure with your child:

  1. Visit the setting or school beforehand, and take your child to look around.
  2. Be open and honest about any difficulties or issues that your child may be experiencing.
  3. Keep all the information you have gathered about your child and share it with the setting or school.
  4. Talk about the school or setting with your child.
  5. Walk or drive past the setting to promote familiarity.
  6. If there is a uniform, or your child needs to take a bag, show them this before they start.
  7. Look on the website and any social media pages for the school or setting to find out as much information as possible - engage your child as much as possible with this activity.
  8. Share any of the given child-friendly information with your child.
  9. Ask staff questions – remember there is no such thing as a silly question!
  10. Attend all meet and greet or transition sessions.
