New developments give more pupils a chance to learn and thrive

Published: 6 October 2026

We’ve made a major investment that means more children will be able to attend their local primary schools thanks to the development of new, modern classrooms.

Expansion projects totalling £4.6 million have been completed over the summer at Norbriggs Primary School in Chesterfield and Eureka Primary School in Swadlincote.

Children returned to school to new learning spaces providing extra school places and high-quality facilities designed to help them learn and thrive.

The developments will help to meet growing demand for school places while giving children access to bright, modern and sustainable learning environments.

At Norbriggs, the £2.7 million project has created 4 new classrooms for key stage 2 pupils, together with new toilets, a group room and additional staff parking.

Using contributions from developers we secured, the single-storey building has been carefully designed to complement the existing school and provide flexible spaces that support teaching and learning.

Meanwhile, a £1.85 million expansion at Eureka Primary School has created 3 additional classrooms, a group room and new toilet facilities.

Both projects have been designed by Concertus Derbyshire on our behalf.

Councillor Simon Mabbott, Cabinet Member for SEND and Education, said:

"Every child deserves the best possible start in life, and having access to a great local school is a vital part of that.

"These new classrooms will benefit hundreds of children over the coming years, providing modern, welcoming spaces where pupils can learn, develop confidence and reach their full potential.

"As communities grow, it is important that we plan ahead to ensure school places are available where they are needed.

"These projects demonstrate our commitment to investing in education and creating learning environments that are fit for the future."

The Norbriggs expansion has increased the school's capacity while retaining valuable outdoor space for pupils. Modern construction methods and enhanced building performance standards also aim to reduce energy use.

At Eureka the new facilities follow detailed work to ensure enough places are available as housing developments in the area grow, ensuring local children can access school places close to home.
