Millie Bright set to become Honorary Freewoman of Derbyshire

Published: 6 September 2023

Our councillors will consider making Millie Bright, Captain of the England Women’s football team, a Freewoman of Derbyshire, at a meeting on Wednesday 13 September 2023.

Millie Bright grew up in in Derbyshire having been born in Chesterfield where she attended Killamarsh Junior School and Eckington School. She began her footballing career at the age of 9 playing for her local team, the Killamarsh Dynamos. Millie has played for both Doncaster Rovers Belles and Chelsea.

Millie’s senior international career began in 2016 and she has represented her country ever since, becoming the team’s captain this summer.

Council Leader, Councillor Barry Lewis said:

“Following the extraordinary success of the England team at the world cup we are proposing that Derbyshire’s own Millie Bright be put forward to become an Honorary Freewoman of Derbyshire.

“The whole team are all amazing ambassadors for women in sport and I felt so proud to know that Millie, the captain, is from Derbyshire.

“I’m sure that all my fellow councillors will agree that putting Millie forward to become an Honorary Freewoman is just one small thing we can do to show her how much we appreciate all the team have done recently.”

It is proposed that we consider Millie’s nomination in principle so that, if agreed, the formality of agreeing to confer the title would be made at a specially convened meeting, as is required by law, to take place on a date to be agreed.
