Meet Derbyshire’s new Honorary Aldermen and Alderwoman

Published: 12 December 2025

We have appointed 6 Honorary Aldermen and 1 Honorary Alderwoman to mark the significant contribution they have made to the authority.

The new Honorary Aldermen are Dave Allen, Barry Bingham, Barry Lewis, Ron Mihaly, Robert Parkinson and Simon Spencer, and the Alderwoman is Jean Innes. All of them have served as councillors for us.

Nominations for the 7 former county councillors were agreed at a meeting of Full Council in October, with a special meeting of Full Council held this week to confer the titles, attended by HM Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire Mrs Elizabeth Fothergill, CBE and the High Sheriff of Derbyshire Sir Richard FitzHerbert Bt.

Our Chairman Councillor Nick Adams presented each of them with a ceremonial badge to recognise their new titles and congratulated them on receiving the honour.

We confer the title of Honorary Alderman or Honorary Alderwoman on former councillors who have given valuable service as past members.

Now their new honorary titles have been conferred, their names will be recorded on a roll of honour.

While they don’t have any right to participate in council meetings or committees beyond that of any member of the public, or to claim any allowances, they are invited to civic ceremonies, meetings and events and will be addressed by their titles Honorary Alderman or Honorary Alderwoman.

Joining the ceremony were former county councillors who already hold the Honorary Alderman and Honorary Alderwoman titles; Joyce Sanders, Judith Twigg, Linda Chilton, Paul Smith and George Wharmby.

Our Chairman Councillor Nick Adams said:

“I was delighted to be a part of the ceremony and present our new Honorary Aldermen and Alderwoman with their ceremonial badges.

“All 7 of them have served the county with dedication, selflessness and distinction for many, many years and I know they will continue to be great champions for our county.”

New Aldermen Dave Allen and Robert Parkinson were previously recognised by us last year when they were both presented with ‘Outstanding Dedication to Derbyshire’ honours to mark their unstinting service, dedication and commitment to their communities for more than 50 years each.
