Local groups invited to apply for grants for environmental projects

Published: 19 September 2025

A new initiative between us and our waste contractor Associated Waste Management (AWM) is set to benefit local communities and the environment.

They have set up a Community Fund offering 10 grants each with a maximum value of £500 to support environmental projects. The fund will be shared between Derby City Council and ourselves, Derbyshire-based groups are eligible to apply for 7 of these grants.

Applications are invited from local community or volunteering groups, Community Interest Companies (CICs), not for profit organisations or registered charities looking to fund an environmental or sustainability themed project.

The scope of the funding is wide but could include things like buying gardening equipment, creating or enhancing community gardens for people and wildlife, adding a recycled bench, putting up bird boxes, or setting up an event to encourage upcycling and reuse.

The judges from ourselves and the city council and AWM will be looking for projects that really pack a punch in terms for value for money, impact on the local environment and involvement with the local community.

Our Cabinet Member for Net Zero and Environment Councillor Carol Wood said:

“We know that groups on the ground have the best knowledge about what could help their local communities and we welcome this funding from AWM to support environmental improvements – backing our commitment to create more prosperous, green and sustainable places with opportunities for all.”

Organisations can submit more than 1 application but will not be awarded more than 1 grant. The closing date for applications is Tuesday 30 September 2025. Successful applicants must spend their grants by 31 March 2026. This is the first round of these grants with more to follow.
