We're installing 7 cameras between Buxton and Whaley Bridge through a £3.1 million package of road safety improvements funded by the government’s Safer Roads Fund.
The first 2 live cameras monitor vehicles travelling through the existing 40mph section of the road at Fernilee.
They are located:
- near the former village hall at the southern end of Fernilee, at the start of the 40mph section
- near The Shady Oak pub car park at the northern end of Fernilee, at the end of the 40mph section.
There are no changes to the existing speed limits.
The cameras will record vehicles as they enter and leave the monitored section. They will then calculate each vehicle’s average speed and compare it with the 40mph limit.
Our Cabinet Member for Highways, Councillor Charlotte Hill, said:
“The A5004 is a challenging route with sharp bends and steep sections, and these cameras form part of our wider work to keep Derbyshire’s roads safe and well maintained.
“Average speed cameras encourage motorists to maintain a safe and legal speed throughout the monitored section, rather than slowing down only when they approach a camera.
“The speed limits along the road have not changed, so we are asking drivers and motorcyclists to take notice of the signs, observe the existing limits and drive according to the conditions.”
The cameras are mounted on grey poles and have bright yellow casings to make them clearly visible. Speed limit repeater signs and camera reminder signs have also been installed along the route.
The remaining 5 cameras will be switched on later this year once final electrical connections and checks have been completed. They will cover further sections of the route, including the 50mph sections north and south of Fernilee and at the Buxton and Whaley Bridge ends of the A5004.
Other improvements introduced or planned along the route include:
- additional safety barriers on hazardous bends, including protection designed to reduce injuries to motorcyclists
- reflective road markings to make bends and changes in the road’s direction clearer
- a review of road signs to reduce clutter and focus drivers’ attention
- resurfacing Old Road to create a cycle-friendly link with quieter roads
- a new shared route for pedestrians and cyclists between Buxton and Cold Springs Farm
- clearance of overhanging trees and vegetation to improve visibility
- a planned new footpath between Cold Springs Farm and Old Road, subject to the completion of land purchases
- a planned signal-controlled pedestrian crossing at the junction of Manchester Road and Devonshire Road in Buxton.
