Derbyshire families invited to explore new best start in life family hubs

Published: 2 October 2026

Families across Derbyshire are being invited to discover the support, activities and services available through our new Best Start in Life (BSiL) Family Hubs at a series of special open days this October.

The events will take place at Birdholme Family Hub on Friday 16 October 2026 and Cotmanhay Family Hub on Monday 19 October 2026, where families will be able to meet staff, explore the facilities and learn more about the support available for children from pregnancy through to starting school. Family sessions at both events will run from 1pm to 3pm.

The open days follow the launch of Derbyshire's first BSiL family hubs, which form part of the county's wider programme. The BSiL programme aims to give every child the best possible start by making it easier for families to access information, advice and support when they need it most.

The family hubs are not replacing children's centres. Instead, they build on the support already available through Derbyshire's existing children's centre network, bringing services together and making support easier to access for families.

As the programme continues to grow, we have also confirmed that Alice's View Children's Centre in North Wingfield will become the county's next family hub, with further hubs planned across Derbyshire.

Families attending the open days will be able to tour the hubs, take part in family activities, meet staff and partner organisations, and find out more about the support available both locally and online through Derbyshire's Best Start in Life programme.

Additional services, activities and resources will continue to be developed as the programme evolves.

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Family Services Councillor Paul Maginnis said:

"These open days are a fantastic opportunity for families to see first-hand how Best Start in Life Family Hubs can support them through their child's early years.

"We want families to feel confident accessing support, information and services when they need them, and these events will provide an opportunity to meet the teams behind the hubs and learn more about the support available."

Elizabeth, a parent attending a Portage Pals session, which supports parents to plan the transition from home-based learning to school or nursery provision, said:

“One of my children is neurodivergent and the other is neurotypical. It's amazing that I can bring them both here and know they will be welcomed, with toys and activities adapted to meet both of their needs. It really is wonderful.”

“I've never felt more comfortable bringing my SEND child anywhere. If you have the opportunity to come to the hubs, just do it, because it will change your life."

Families interested in attending either open day are encouraged to register in advance.
