Cabinet Members will be asked to approve the plan, called the Environmental Sustainability Strategy at a meeting next week (Thursday 30 July 2026).
If the new plan gets the go-ahead, it will help the council to carry out legal duties placed upon it by the Environment Act 2021 and other legislation and will help to improve health and wellbeing, reduce energy costs for households, improve access to green spaces and help communities and businesses to be stronger and more resilient.
The strategy, which covers the period to 2030, focuses on eight themes:
- caring for Derbyshire’s natural environment and landscapes
- using energy, fuel and water efficiently
- supporting clean, secure energy for Derbyshire
- maintaining and improving air quality
- reducing waste and using resources wisely
- preparing for extreme and adverse weather
- making it easier for people to travel around Derbyshire
- helping people connect with the natural environment
Councillor Carol Wood, Cabinet Member for Environment, said:
