The re-use shop, based at the Buttermilk Lane centre, is stocked with items collected at 8 of our 9 recycling centres, operated by contractors H W Martin.
Sales from the shop raised more than £20,000 in the 12 months from April 2025.
Along with HW Martin we've agreed to donate all of the profits to local community groups and organisations.
Derbyshire Voluntary Action (DVA) is administering the £20,000 fund on our behalf and HW Martin and groups can apply online for grants of between £500 and £2,500. The grant scheme closes on 23 October 2026. Find out more about the grants, eligibility criteria and how to apply.
Councillor Carol Wood, Cabinet Member for Environment, said:
“One person’s junk is another person’s treasure and our re-use shop at Bolsover is proving really popular. We’re successfully diverting reusable items from disposal, underpinning our commitment to protect and improve our environment. And by marketing reusable items for re-sale, we’re generating income to support good causes. It’s a win-win situation.”
From furniture and homeware to garden equipment, books, CDs and vinyl, items brought to our recycling centres may be set aside by staff for re-sale in the shop. But anyone with items they believe might be suitable can hand them to staff on-site who will be happy to take a look.
All goods are checked to ensure products are high quality before being displayed for sale and customers can take a look around the shop during opening hours at the recycling centre which are 8.30am to 6pm every day, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
Typical types of goods sold in re-use shops:
- furniture
- crockery, pots, cutlery, kitchen goods

- ornaments
- pictures, picture frames and pieces of art
- garden furniture, garden tools, garden ornaments

Purchases can be made using cash or electronically.
Phil Darwin, Director HW Martin Waste Ltd, said:
“We’re incredibly proud to be able to give such a fantastic amount back to good causes across Derbyshire, working in partnership with Derbyshire County Council.
“The success of the Bolsover Shop really is a team effort – from our dedicated staff on site to the local residents who regularly pop in, buy items and support reuse. Every purchase helps make a difference, and we’re really looking forward to seeing the projects and local communities that benefit from the grants.”
