Annalise Gunning, apprentice bench joiner

Annalise Gunning talks about her experience and why she chose a bench joiner apprenticeship.

Annalise Gunning

"I chose Derbyshire County Council for my apprenticeship because I believed it would offer a stable, safe and fair working and learning environment for me, as a female, and, as an adult apprentice.

"Since day one, in the joiners shop I have worked on a range of 'real jobs', from door frames and fire doors with all the regulations that have to be adhered to, bespoke curved window frames and sashes right through to large veneer cabinets for new school classrooms.

"I attend college one day a week which provides further technical knowledge in the use of tools, timber processing and health and safety within the workplace. I have even taken the opportunity to join some of the internal networks available within the council to keep abreast of the news and changes relevant to me.

"Every day holds a new challenge, working alongside some great personalities with years of expertise. Here, you can learn so much, so quickly if you pluck the courage to get stuck in and just have a go."
