Storytelling toolkit

Bloo the Gnu and the Zebra Crossing story book cover Our story telling toolkit was developed in response to a request to provide a sustainable travel and road safety resource which would compliment the reading champions (opens in a new window) scheme and World book day (opens in a new window).

Developed and trialled with a number of schools across Derbyshire our story tells the tale of a gnu (or wildebeest) as it travels across the grasslands of Africa.

The story character has been adopted by schools as a walking mascot, and the toolkit includes a tally chart so children can attempt to complete the equivalent distance of the wildebeest migration by using different sustainable modes of travel to school.

The story can be used to remind children of importance of keeping safe when crossing the road.

The resource also links with literacy objectives around story telling and writing. The story can be used as a template for children to perform and write their own story.

To support this activity there are mask templates and a suggested scheme of work for teachers which you can download from the related documents section. The mask templates are available in colour or black and while for the children to colour themselves.
