Cycle safely

It is important to keep safe when cycling on roads. Here are some essential safety tips.

  • Make sure you can be seen. Ride clear of the kerb, wear bright clothing and always use lights after dark or in poor weather conditions.

  • Wear a cycle helmet.

  • Show drivers what you plan to do. Always look and signal before you start, stop or turn.

  • Ride a straight line past parked cars rather than dodging between them.

  • Remember that you have to obey traffic lights and signs, just like other traffic!

  • Pavements are for people unless it is clearly marked as a cycle path - and always give pedestrians plenty of room.

  • Know your crossings! The only type of crossing you can ride across the road on is a 'toucan' - you can easily tell these by the 'green bike' light'.
