Public health annual report

Each year the Director of Public Health produces a report about the health of Derbyshire.

Director of Public Health Annual Report 2023 - Let's Chat about Mental Health and Wellbeing

This year’s Director of Public Health Annual Report looks at the Mental Health and Wellbeing of the people in Derbyshire.

There’s information on support services and examples of the work that Public Health in Derbyshire is doing to improve the mental health and wellbeing of Derbyshire residents.

This is Ellie Houlston’s first report as Director of Public Health for Derbyshire.

What’s in the report?

The last few years have impacted on everyone’s mental health in many ways and our emotional health and wellbeing affects all our lives. Mental health and wellbeing is about individuals and communities feeling good and functioning well.

The report looks at what is mental health and wellbeing and what can impact on our mental health and wellbeing.

It looks in detail at mental health and wellbeing throughout our whole lifetime, the impact on mental health from COVID-19 and the cost-of-living pressures.

It also looks at population mental health and how our public health team have worked with partners, organisations, and communities to offer help and support to more people more of the time.

The report also offers next steps and recommendations and information on sources of help, advice, and support.

The report builds on the Let’s Chat campaign, with mental health and wellbeing being a priority for public health in Derbyshire.

The report describes a snapshot of how our public health team, along with partners and communities, have worked together to support people with their mental health and wellbeing, but much more work is needed.

Recommendations

The recommendations from the report follow. Public Health Derbyshire will be reviewing these in 12 months’ time to see what actions have been taken:

  1. Across the system, public health recommends a whole system approach to mental health is adopted in Derbyshire.

  2. Locally, Derbyshire public health alongside partners and communities will build on this positive work over the next 12 months by:

    • continuing to use a life course approach to mental health with a focus on children and young people’s support and projects, including reviewing their impact. The aim is to give children and young people the best start in life and positively influence wellbeing into adulthood
    • monitoring and responding to the mental health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Derbyshire, with a recognition that medium and longer-term impacts may yet be seen
    • continuing to support those who are facing the greatest challenges from the cost-of-living pressures. Winter 2023/24 may be equally challenging for many as winter 2022/23
    • this requires a focus on financial and mental health support in the short term as well as embedding early intervention approaches to help prevent potential mental health impacts longer-term
    • using Core20PLS5 population approach to focus action for the 20% most deprived communities and those experiencing SMI, with the aim of reducing health inequalities in mental and physical health
  3. Individually, everyone can have a positive role to play in supporting others with their mental health and wellbeing. So, the call to action in this report is simple, we want as many people as possible across the county to do the following: Let’s chat. Let’s ask. let’s listen.
